Kolkota - A walk through.

It was my maiden visit to Mamta didi's nagari. I was on my way to Bhutan with Rajvir Bhatnagar to celebrate the 32 years of life spent together. We had a stop over in Kolkata. We reached Kolkata in forenoon and our flight to Thimpu was early morning next day. We had almost 10 hours at out disposal.

We were staying in the Park street area . Though, I wanted to visit Kalibari temple, Ramkrishna mission , Dakshineshwar temple and Victoria memorial, we could not. We have to come back by 4 O' clock and most of the cabwalas refused to commit on the return timings.

Coming back on time was important to us as we had a river cruise with dinner on Hoogly. We thought of exploring the city around on foot. Here are some pictures of our walk in tour of Park street, Kolkota.

This part of the city looks to be very old. There was a whole city on the footpath. One may find tea vendors, small eateries, hand carts stand, barbers, hand pump and small family huts on the footpath.

It was very dirty sight. It pinches to see people living in conditions below human dignity . Is it because they are happy with their present state of mind or are too much dependent on the government efforts, which I think are not coming forward?

I have heard that the hand carts were banned in Kolkata.

This part of the city was very old as the view of  electric wiring across the lane is visibly pointing out. It was amusing to locate the modern airlines, "AIR ASIA's office in such dirty lanes of the city.

Life on the pavement is full of challenges. Though water was available right there, the unhygienic living conditions were making very unhappy site in the "city of happiness".

There were many small eatries on the main park street. I was keen to have some local food from some local joint. We tried some kachories with potato gravy vegetable , puchkaas , mishtidoi and Sandesh.
I did not find anything special in any of them. Amul's mishtidoi is much better so is sandesh. I make the best paani for puchkaas. I like the rajasthaani or uttar pradesh's kachauri aaloo than what I ate in Kolkota. Street food has been much highlighted by the new food channels, without giving any thought to the unhygienic conditions, in which they are prepared.
